This brooch is a design that became wildly popular in the Victorian period, until then Purple had been extremely expensive in all its forms, from fabric dyes to gemstones, then, large deposits of Amethyst was discovered, and the clothes dye Mauvine invented, and purple became the colour of the era.
Jewellers made joyful fun pieces in newly affordable Amethyst, and this brooch is so beautiful, the quality of it is sublime. I've seen a few brooches in this style, and this one is best in class, and not by a small measure, it’s the best I've seen by a country mile. The Amethyst is huge, I've estimated it at 30 carat, but I think I might be being a little cautious. And not only is the Amethyst huge, it’s a fabulous velvety Purple too, deep in colour, and really really lively. The Seed Pearls that make up the halo are perfectly matched, and in excellent condition.
It’s heavy set in buttery yellow gold, and has a little safety pin catch as insurance, belt and braces :)
